Aldo Cassidy is a fictional version of John le Carré. He is bored with life and with the success he faces continuously. A naive and sentimental lover, he is torn from the inflexible and ordered certainties of his life and seduced into the bohemian lifestyle by a sudden encounter with a wild and wandering artist named Shamus and his nakedly alluring wife, Helen. It draws from the author’s own relationship with James and Susan Kennaway after the failure of le Carré’s first marriage.
