Sense and Sensibility was penned by Austen under the pseudonym A Lady. It is the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne and is set in England between the time period 1792 and 1797. Mrs. Dashwood and her three beautiful daughters must leave Norland and move to Barton Park. Elinor, who happens to be the eldest and the most sensible, is broken-hearted to be parting ways with her beloved Edward. But the Dashwoods do make new friends in Barton Park. Colonel Brandon is a 35 year old unmarried man who is extremely attracted to Marianne. Marianne is an impulsive seventeen-year-old who believes in romantic idealism. She isn’t really in love with the Colonel, but is attracted to the handsome John Willoughby. During the period in-between, Anne and Lucy Steele come to visit the Dashwoods. These two egoistic sisters tell Elinor that Lucy is covertly engaged to Edward Ferrars. Elinor is devastated, but she keeps her emotions in control so that her family isn’t overwhelmed. What happens next, in the lives of the Dashwood sisters, is an overwhelming course of the story. The book has been adapted into television series and major motion pictures several times.
